Tentative Agreement Reached in Snohomish
The Snohomish Education Association announced today that a tentative agreement
has been reached with the school district. Bargaining lasted into the night
on Sunday and resumed for several hours on Monday.
A General Membership meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, September 24, 9:00 a.m. at the Snohomish High School Performing Arts Center. SEA members will vote at that time to either ratify or reject the tentative agreement.
No details of the agreement will be released until the members have had the opportunity to examine it.
"Our members will carefully consider this proposal," says SEA President Kit Raney. "We have been on strike since September 4 intent on attaining a fair and reasonable contract. Our bargaining team has worked hard and long to reach this tentative agreement. The parents and community of Snohomish have strongly supported our cause which we greatly appreciate."
If the tentative agreement is ratified, school will begin on Wednesday, September 25.
The Fife Education Association had the longest strike in the state of Washington, lasting 37 days in 1995. The Snohomish strike, if the contract is ratified on Tuesday, will have been 21 days in length tying with Clover Park for the ninth longest strike in Washington.
Negotiators for the 470-member Snohomish Education Association and the Snohomish School district began bargaining last May. The teachers have been on strike since September 4.
There are more than 8,000 students in Snohomish's 14 schools.
